Scarring

Scarring: Causes, Types & Treatment Options

Scarring occurs when the skin undergoes trauma, triggering the body’s natural wound-healing process. While scars are a normal part of healing, their appearance can vary based on the severity of the injury, skin type, and treatment approach. At Phantom Medical Group, we offer specialized treatments to reduce the appearance of scars, smooth skin texture, and restore confidence.

What Causes Scarring?

Scars form when the dermis (the deeper layer of the skin) is damaged. The body produces collagen fibers to repair the injury, but this process can lead to raised, sunken, or discolored areas on the skin. The most common causes of scarring include:

  • Acne – Severe breakouts, particularly cystic acne, can damage the skin and leave lasting scars.
  • Surgical Procedures – Incisions from surgery may result in visible scars, depending on wound healing.
  • Injuries & Wound Healing – Cuts, scrapes, or deep wounds can leave behind scarring.
  • Burns – Burns can cause extensive scarring, sometimes leading to thick, raised scars.
  • Hyperpigmentation & Uneven Texture – While not a true scar, pigmentation left behind from acne or injuries can create an uneven complexion.

Types of Scars

Scars can appear in various forms, depending on how the skin heals:

1. Atrophic (Depressed) Scars

These scars appear indented or sunken due to a loss of collagen and tissue beneath the skin. They are common after severe acne or chickenpox and include:

  • Ice Pick Scars – Small, deep, narrow indentations that resemble puncture marks.
  • Boxcar Scars – Wider, box-like depressions with sharp edges.
  • Rolling Scars – Shallow, wave-like indentations that create an uneven skin surface.

Treatment Options:

  • RF Microneedling – Stimulates collagen production to plump and smooth the skin.
  • Dermal Fillers – Hyaluronic acid-based fillers temporarily lift depressed scars.
  • Chemical Peels – Removes damaged skin layers, promoting regeneration.

2. Hypertrophic (Raised) Scars

These scars are thicker and more elevated than the surrounding skin. They result from excess collagen production during healing and are often found at the site of surgical incisions, cuts, or burns.

Treatment Options:

  • RF Microneedling – Helps break down excess collagen and flatten raised scars.
  • Chemical Peels – Exfoliates the top layers of skin to smooth texture.

3. Keloid Scars

Keloids are thick, raised, and extend beyond the original wound area. They are more common in individuals with darker skin tones and often form on the chest, shoulders, earlobes, and back.

Treatment Options:

  • RF Microneedling – Helps reduce the thickness of keloid scars.
  • Steroid Injections – May help shrink and soften keloids.

4. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

While not a true scar, PIH occurs after skin inflammation (such as acne or injuries), leaving behind dark or red discoloration.

Treatment Options:

  • Chemical Peels – Brightens and evens out skin tone.
  • Skincare Routine – Medical-grade products with vitamin C, retinoids, and SPF to fade pigmentation over time.
